Biography

Erica Schuller (AIR-ih-kuh SHOO-ler)

Praised for her “lively personality, abundant charm, and luscious vocalism” and “crystalline voice,” soprano Erica Schuller is a versatile performer, recognized for bringing committed vocal artistry and theatricality to a broad musical repertory. Her particular affinity for Baroque repertoire has brought her increasing attention from some of the country’s finest Early Music ensembles. This season brings debut performances with Boise Philharmonic (Handel’s Messiah) and Chicago Opera Theater (Weill’s Der Silbersee). She will also play the role of Proserpina in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, presented jointly by Haymarket Opera Company and Newberry Consort.

Last season began with performances of Jacobean English repertoire with Newberry Consort (I Tremble Not). Musical America Worldwide noted, “Erica Schuller’s soprano was luminous as ever, with ornaments as agile as flickering flame.” She returned to Ars Lyrica Houston for performances of Monteverdi madrigals and ended the year as the soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Apollo’s Fire. Chicago Classical Review wrote, “Soprano Erica Schuller was buoyant and silvery in the rippling melismata of ‘Rejoice Greatly’ and other such barnstormers, though her glowing incantations throughout the program proved equally enchanting.”

In 2025, Schuller made her second appearance at the acclaimed Ravinia Festival as Morgana in Handel’s Alcina, alongside world-renowned soprano Nicole Cabell. She also performed the role of Euridice in Peri’s opera Euridice in a first-time collaboration between Chicago’s Haymarket Opera Company and Newberry Consort. She was praised for the “fine glow of her lyric soprano” by Chicago Classical Review.

Recent performances of note include Herodias in Grimani’s La decollazione di San Giovanni Battista with Haymarket Opera. Chicago Classical Review described her performance as “inspired,” further praising her “generous soprano” and “lush, fluent tone.” As a featured soloist in subscription concerts with Apollo’s Fire (Love in Venice) Newberry Consort (In the Castle of the Moon), and Ars Lyrica Houston (Songs of Zion). She was commended by reviewers as a “standout,” with “significant vocal artistry” and a “nimble, inviting soprano.”

Originally from Wisconsin, Schuller received her Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and holds degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music.
