American Sputnik – A New Musical Odyssey
In an exciting new collaboration, The Gilmore and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) have announced the co-commissioning of American Sputnik, a solo work for baritone, piano, and orchestra. This new composition, written by award-winning composer Evan Mack and Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning librettist Mark Campbell, will premiere in 2026 at the Gilmore Piano Festival during the John W. and Rosemary K. Brown Family Concert in honor of Daniel Gustin. The work explores the remarkable journey of American pianist Van Cliburn, whose historic victory at the 1958 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition took place at the height of the Cold War, making him an overnight sensation and symbol of artistic diplomacy.
The Story of American Sputnik
American Sputnik takes the audience through Van Cliburn’s emotional and professional journey, from his arrival in Moscow, to the high-stakes competition, to his triumphant return to the United States. Told in three parts—“Arrival,” “Competition,” and “Return”—this powerful narrative brings to life the intense political and cultural pressures of the time, while celebrating the universality of music as a bridge between divided nations.
Baritone Joseph Lattanzi, described by The New York Times as possessing a “buttery baritone” that is both luxuriant and robust, will take on the role of Van Cliburn. Lattanzi will be joined by internationally renowned pianist Stanislav Khristenko, hailed by Le Soir as a “poet of piano.” The ensemble will include a string quartet, French horn, and flute, adding further depth to the evocative soundscape. Together, the artists will bring Van Cliburn’s remarkable Cold War experience to life through a seamless fusion of opera, piano, and orchestral music.
Composer Evan Mack, reflecting on Cliburn’s cultural impact, noted, “In the score of American Sputnik, I centered the musical storytelling around Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. These pieces subtly remind the audience of the music that Van Cliburn, through his artistry, used to connect two opposing cultures.”
A Collaborative Vision for New Music
This co-commission is the result of a shared vision between The Gilmore and the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra to push the boundaries of classical music by blending different genres and art forms. Dr. Pierre van der Westhuizen, Executive and Artistic Director of The Gilmore, remarked, “Commissioning American Sputnik reflects our goal to expand what a piano festival can offer. By combining opera’s emotional depth with the virtuosity of piano, we aim to give audiences a unique, deeply engaging experience.”
Jessica Mallow Gulley, President and CEO of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, echoed this sentiment: “Our longstanding partnership with The Gilmore has always been about bringing innovative music to life. American Sputnik is the perfect embodiment of our shared commitment to creating new, thought-provoking works that resonate with our community. Music Director Julian Kuerti and I believe strongly that supporting and performing new music is a key part of the Symphony’s mission to inspire and connect people through the arts.”
Librettist Mark Campbell also highlighted the relevance of Van Cliburn’s story in today’s world. “When Evan suggested Van Cliburn as a subject, I was thrilled,” said Campbell. “At a time when tensions between the U.S. and Russia are rising again, Cliburn’s story serves as a reminder of how art—and music, in particular—can transcend political divides and foster understanding between nations.”
The Second Half: Alexandre Kantorow and Tchaikovsky
The evening will conclude with a performance by 2024 Gilmore Artist Alexandre Kantorow, performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2, the same piece that earned him the first prize Gold Medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition. Kantorow, the first French pianist to achieve this honor, continues to captivate audiences worldwide with his extraordinary technique and emotional depth. Accompanied by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Julian Kuerti, Kantorow’s performance will form a compelling counterpoint to American Sputnik, drawing connections between two major Russian composers whose music shaped Van Cliburn’s career.
The Gilmore & the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra’s Legacy of Supporting New Music
The Gilmore Piano Festival has long been at the forefront of commissioning new works that challenge and expand the piano repertoire. Over the years, The Gilmore has commissioned more than 40 new compositions from some of the most esteemed names in contemporary classical music, including Matthew Aucoin, Chick Corea, Nico Muhly, and many others. These commissions reflect The Gilmore’s ongoing commitment to not only celebrate the legacy of the piano but also to push its artistic boundaries.
The partnership between The Gilmore and KSO has also resulted in several significant new works, such as Richard Adams’ Tandem Voices and Michel Legrand’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Together, these two institutions continue to enrich the classical music landscape, bringing innovative and compelling new compositions to life.
A Musical Event Not to Be Missed
As the premiere of American Sputnik approaches, anticipation is building for a performance that promises to be both artistically groundbreaking and emotionally resonant. With its powerful combination of opera, piano, and orchestra, American Sputnik will offer a fresh perspective on Van Cliburn’s historic achievements and the role of music in bridging cultural divides.
Paired with Alexandre Kantorow’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2, this program will explore the connections between Russian music and American history in a way that is both timeless and timely. Audiences will not want to miss this extraordinary evening of music and history coming to the 2026 Gilmore Piano Festival.
