Meet the Musician
Where were you born? Where do you call home now?
Columbus, OH | Kalamazoo, MI
Where did you study? Who did you study under?
University of Michigan (Diana Gannett) and Western Michigan University (Tom Knific)
When did you first discover your instrument? How old were you?
Fifth grade orchestra in Portage Public Schools – I wanted to be a little different, so I had to go with the largest instrument. And it stuck!
How did you come to be with the KSO? What is your best memory here?
I began subbing with the KSO and then took an audition during college. It is hard to pick one memory – We have played a lot of amazing music over the years!
Who is a musician/mentor who inspires you? What makes them special?
I am inspired by my colleagues in the bass section. They all have diverse musical and life interests and are super talented and fun people to work with.
What is your favorite piece you’ve ever played? What did it feel like to play?
Again, it’s hard to pick one, but Mahler Symphony No. 2 has a really difficult but engaging bass part, and the piece is very profound and moving.
What do you love most about Kalamazoo? What are your hobbies/interests outside of the music world?
I grew up here and have lived most of my life here, so this is a long list. I enjoy Kalamazoo’s relatively small size and proximity to outdoor activities. Outside of music, I am a Portage Central High School teacher and an avid runner (I also coach cross country and track). We are fortunate to be able to get outside all four seasons and play on trails, sand, and in/around lakes.
Your playlist recap is here…who is your most listened-to artist? (of any genre)
I really listen to almost everything, but some “go-to’s” are Van Morrison, U2, Bach, Coldplay, Carbon Leaf, Green Day, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
