Meet the Musician
Where were you born? Where do you call home now?
I was born in Kalamazoo and now live in Kalamazoo, with some decades off in between.
Where did you study? Who did you study under?
I have music degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame, and summer study in Aspen, Chautauqua, Los Angeles.
When did you first discover your instrument? How old were you?
The story is that I saw a group of young string players at the mall – the Suzuki method was new back then – and I decided then and there that I wanted to play the cello. I was probably five or six.
How did you come to be with the KSO? What is your best memory here?
KSO had cello openings when I was looking for work following my degree work. I landed positions both times! I have been lucky to play under Yoshimi Takeda, Raymond Harvey, and now Julian Kuerti with an amazing group of talented colleagues!
Who is a musician/mentor who inspires you? What makes them special?
It’s obvious, but Yo-Yo Ma is not only inspiring on the cello but also an incredible humanitarian and human being. I had the pleasure of substitute playing in an orchestra with whom he recently appeared as a special guest artist, and I can honestly say he’s the most real deal ever.
What is your favorite piece you’ve ever played? What did it feel like to play?
I love playing symphonic repertoire – it’s so powerful and colorful; I love how the different instruments add so many tones and timbres.
What do you love most about Kalamazoo? What are your hobbies/interests outside of the music world?
I love that Kalamazoo has a vibrant arts community. I love that people are interested in physical fitness here. I love to take long walks and am currently walking across the whole state of Michigan with my two sisters! We are going piece by piece, and it will take us several years. We started with the Kal-Haven trail on Memorial Day weekend 2021 and have gotten as far as Jackson.
Your playlist recap is here…who is your most listened-to artist? (of any genre)
I listen to Baroque music the most; it makes me feel peaceful and centered.
