Meet the Musician
Where were you born? Where do you call home now?
Codlea, Romania | Grand Rapids, Michigan
Where did you study? Who did you study under?
Conservatory of Music, Cluj, Romania; Bowling Green State Univ.; Michigan State University. Prof. Serafim Antropov-Manu, Ilse Herbert Laszlo, Dr. Alan Smith, Owen Carman.
When did you first discover your instrument? How old were you?
I was 11 when I enrolled in a music academy, and I chose cello after playing violin for two years.
How did you come to be with the KSO? What is your best memory here?
After moving back to Michigan, I auditioned for most of the orchestras around Grand Rapids, and KSO was on top of my list. There are a few: playing with famous soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and Emanuel Ax. Maybe the best memory is rehearsing and playing Mozart with the great Leon Fleischer.
Who is a musician/mentor who inspires you? What makes them special?
My late cello professor and mentor, Serafim Antropov-Manu, was one of the greatest cello teachers in Europe at that time. I owe him my musical career.
What is your favorite piece you’ve ever played? What did it feel like to play?
Maybe the most special piece for me was the solo part of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, which I played with two professional orchestras. It was, for sure, a very great and unique experience.
What do you love most about Kalamazoo? What are your hobbies/interests outside of the music world?
The music-loving community and the very friendly relationship between the KSO musicians. I like gardening, biking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.
Your playlist recap is here…who is your most listened-to artist? (of any genre)
